Goal inflation calculator
Explore the future cost of a goal using an annual inflation assumption you choose. Compare hypothetical scenarios, with no investment-return forecast.

Your calculation
Enter your own values and choose Calculate. No assumption has been selected for you.
Estimate a cost, not an investment return
Enter what a goal costs today, the number of whole years until you expect to pay for it, and an annual price-increase assumption. A future cost estimate answers what you might need to pay under that assumption. It does not calculate what your savings will grow to or recommend an investment.
Overall consumer-price inflation measures a basket of goods and services. Your goal, such as education, a home repair or equipment, can change at a different rate. Use a current estimate for the particular goal and compare more than one assumption. Neither the selected rate nor the comparison rates are forecasts. Read how inflation differs from investment growth.
Formula and worked example
Future cost = present cost × (1 + annual inflation percentage ÷ 100)years. We compound once per year at the same assumed rate for each whole year. We retain calculation precision until displaying the amount to the nearest rupee.
Illustration: a goal costing ₹2,00,000 today, 10 years away, at an assumed 6% annual increase gives ₹3,58,170, an increase of ₹1,58,170. At 4% the same goal is ₹2,96,049; at 8% it is ₹4,31,785. These are three hypothetical cost paths, not likely, best or worst outcomes.
Understanding the comparisons
The tool compares your rate with 2 percentage points below and above it, bounded by the tool’s 0% to 20% input range. Near the boundary, comparisons can be less than 2 points apart. It does not assign probabilities or say which assumption you should choose.
Limits
Present cost accepts ₹0 to ₹1,00,00,00,000. Years accepts whole numbers from 0 to 100. Rates accept 0% to 20%, with at most two decimal places. Zero years or zero inflation keeps the entered cost unchanged; a zero cost stays zero. Negative rates (deflation), fractional years and changing annual rates are not modelled. To avoid misleading precision at extreme combinations, future costs above ₹1 lakh crore are not displayed. These are software limits, not economic limits.
The result excludes investment growth, contributions, taxes, fees and changes to the goal itself. It also does not tell you how much to invest each month. Review the goal cost and your assumptions as circumstances change. Put the goal alongside your other commitments.
