What this assumes

  • A fixed nominal annual rate, divided by 12, with monthly payments in arrears on a reducing balance.
  • The full amount is disbursed at the start. No rate changes or prepayments.
  • Processing fees, insurance, taxes and other charges are excluded. This is not APR or a lender quote.

Understand what is behind the number.

Formula and worked example

Monthly rate r = annual rate ÷ 1200. EMI = principal × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−months). At zero interest, EMI = principal ÷ months.

A ₹1,20,000 loan at 12% nominal annual interest for 12 months has an EMI of approximately ₹10,662 and total interest of approximately ₹7,942, before charges.
